Madrid eviction: 87-year-old faces fourth attempt

A judicial commission entered the Madrid home of Maricarmen, 87, on Wednesday to carry out an eviction in the fourth attempt to remove her. Demonstrators gathered in the Retiro district in an effort to stop it.

At the same time, Health Minister and Más Madrid leader Mónica García called for the government to put its emergency housing decree before the Council of Ministers next Tuesday. She said the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party, PSOE, could not keep delaying it.

Rent rose above pension

García said Maricarmen’s rent climbed above her pension after an investment fund bought her home. The minister said there should be no more evictions like Maricarmen’s and criticised owners linked to so-called vulture funds.

Fresh push for housing decree

The proposed decree failed in April after the People’s Party, PP, Junts and Vox voted against Sumar’s plan. That proposal would have extended rental contracts due to expire in 2026 and 2027.

It also included a 2% cap on rent rises imposed by landlords. García said PP, Junts and Vox must not vote against the measure again.
