Madrid housing protest: Podemos backs longer camp
At Puerta del Sol in Madrid, Spain, a housing protest camp could stay longer: Podemos says it will back an extension if the protesters choose to remain. On 28 September, party political secretary Irene Montero says that decision is theirs.
The protesters want evictions banned and rental contracts extended by law. In a television interview, Montero accuses the government of negotiating first with Junts and the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV), which she says want to weaken the housing decree. She warns that Podemos will not accept a deal with those parties imposed on protesters.
Montero says protest is needed to bring change. She argues that the government is trying to contain the movement rather than listen to it. For now, whether the camp continues rests with the people at Puerta del Sol.
