Mallorca air ambulance plan gets go-ahead for 2028
Mallorca is set to have a medical helicopter based on the island from 2028. On 30 October 2026, the Balearic government authorised a 15-year air ambulance contract for patient transport, with an estimated value of three hundred and fifty-one point nine million euros. Menorca and Eivissa are due to have a helicopter each.
A fourth helicopter will provide backup. The fleet will also include a medical plane, based on Mallorca or Menorca at the operator’s choice. The government expects about 1,800 flight hours a year across the fleet, though the total could change with demand.
The service is planned to be available around the clock. Two pilots will be on site for 12 hours, with pilots on call for the other 12 hours. Teams will work rotating shifts of 14 days on and 14 days off.
The Balearic emergency medical service, SAMU 061, coordinates patient transport across the islands. Government spokesman Antoni Costa says the flights are vital for cutting transfer times, maintaining care between islands and reaching specialist centres on the mainland. He also points to their role in serious emergencies and incidents involving multiple casualties.
