Mallorca airport law: Madrid stops Congress debate
Mallorca’s bid to share control of its airports has hit a wall in Madrid. In Palma, Mallorca, on Monday, Marga Prohens, leader of the Balearic Islands’ People’s Party, said Spain’s government had rejected a Congress debate on a law passed by the Balearic Parliament. The proposal would introduce joint management of the islands’ airports, and the PP wants its progress through Congress to continue.
Prohens called the move a “veto”. She said Madrid’s reasons were that flight numbers to the islands must keep rising or airport operator Aena would lose economic capacity, and that the law would affect property activity.
She argued that this clashes with the Socialists’ policy against tourism overcrowding in the Balearic Islands. Prohens demanded explanations from Tourism Secretary of State Rosario Sánchez, Congress president Francina Armengol and MÉS, saying they express outrage while supporting Spain’s government.
