Mallorca drought and floods: Prohens seeks EU funds

Mallorca and the rest of the Balearic Islands have €713 million in water projects planned. President Marga Prohens wants a dedicated pot of European Union money for infrastructure to help tackle drought and floods. She made the call at a seminar in Brussels, Belgium, on Thursday, ahead of the EU’s 2028–2034 budget.

The plans include expanding and modernising desalination plants, improving water-supply connections and replacing pipes to cut leaks. They also cover upgrades to wastewater treatment plants and greater reuse of treated water. According to the Balearic Islands government, spending on water infrastructure has reached up to €322 million a year during Prohens’ term, around 5% of its budget.

Prohens wants EU funding to go directly to regional and local authorities, not just member states. She said those authorities are often responsible for managing water infrastructure or getting it built.

On heavy rain and floods, Prohens pointed to steps her government has taken to improve preparation and coordination. They include Inuncaib, a coordination body involving government departments, Spain’s State Meteorological Agency and the University of the Balearic Islands.
