Mallorca waste: Balearics beat 2035 landfill goal

Mallorca and the other Balearic Islands send 6.01% of their municipal waste to landfill: together, they are already below the 10% limit set for 2035. A Spanish state report covered on 29 September puts the islands among five territories with the best prospects of meeting the full set of waste targets. Recycling, though, remains the harder test.

The report says the Balearics could reach the 2035 goal of collecting 50% of waste separately. It identifies a second goal — preparing 65% of waste for reuse or recycling — as the biggest challenge.

The Balearic regional government says it is working with local councils and island councils to improve separate collection and recycling. Regional minister Alejandro Sáenz de San Pedro says that since 2023, it has simplified procedures and improved how it manages investments and grants. He says projects and measures are beginning to take shape across the islands, and their results will be monitored.
