Mallorca’s undersea link to mainland Spain covers 21.2% of the Balearic Islands’ electricity demand in September 2026, as power use across the islands rises. Demand is 3.7% higher than a year earlier after allowing for temperature and the number of working days, according to figures published by Spanish grid operator Red Eléctrica de España on 2 October.

Without those adjustments, demand reaches an estimated 639,696 megawatt hours for the month, up 5.8% on September 2025. Since the start of the year, it has topped 5.2 million megawatt hours, a rise of 6.4%.

Combined-cycle plants, which use gas and steam to generate electricity, provide 63.8% of the power produced on the islands in September. Solar panels account for 11.3%, while renewables as a whole make up 14.1%. The mainland link through Mallorca supplies a substantial share of demand alongside that island generation.
