Mallorca car cap: parliament opens key vote on Wednesday

Mallorca’s plan to limit cars on the island goes before parliament in Palma on Wednesday. MPs will decide whether to take forward a bill controlling the entry of private vehicles and hire cars. Island Council president Llorenç Galmés will present the proposal.

The Consell de Mallorca approved the bill in June and says it expects to set the maximum number of private and rental vehicles allowed to drive on Mallorca before the end of the year. The PP believes parliament could give the law final approval in October or November, allowing it to take effect for the 2027 tourist season.

MÉS per Mallorca has said it will vote to move the bill forward, while Vox plans to abstain. Wednesday’s vote is only on whether the proposal proceeds through parliament.

Nursery pay and energy-drink ban also up for votes

MPs will also vote on two decree laws passed by the Balearic Government in August. One includes plans to bring the pay of educators at subsidised private escoletes — early-years centres — into line with colleagues at other schools.

Xarxa 0-3 and the CCOO, UGT and STEI unions have called a protest outside parliament, citing what they call a deadlock with employers in negotiations over the regional agreement for the 0-3 sector. They also want a sector-wide committee at the Education Ministry and an urgent review of minimum requirements rules.

The other decree would ban the sale of energy drinks to under-18s. Anyone breaking the rule could face fines of between €6,000 and €60,000.
