Mallorca card thieves hit tourist with car

A German tourist suffered minor injuries after a fleeing driver knocked him to the ground at Port d’Andratx, Mallorca, on 29 August. The man had spotted people he believed had stolen his credit card at a parking meter, then followed them to a nearby cash machine. When the group tried to leave by car, the driver struck him, the Guardia Civil said.

The suspected thieves had approached the tourist while he was at the parking meter. After taking his card, they went to the nearby cash machine to withdraw money. They then left the scene after the collision.

Help at parking meters, then missing cards

Investigators say the group targeted tourists, mainly older people, offering help with payments at blue-zone parking meters or other matters. They allegedly used the distraction to take belongings, especially bank cards.

The cards were then used in fraudulent transactions, according to the Guardia Civil.

Two men arrested in s’Arenal

Guardia Civil officers from Calvià later found and arrested two suspected group members, aged 28 and 27, in s’Arenal. Officers seized cash, several mobile phones and a mid-range car.

Police believe the pair may also be linked to several thefts and bank-card fraud cases in Santa Ponça in May, carried out in a similar way. The men are currently suspected of seven offences, including repeated violent robbery, theft and bank-card fraud.

The investigation remains open. Officers are seeking other identified members of the group.
