Mallorca PP blocks extra cost-of-living aid for families

Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands, will not get the extra cost-of-living aid proposed for people on low and middle incomes: the PP votes against the plan on Thursday, 8 October. MÉS per Mallorca put the motion to the Council of Mallorca, seeking extra payments for families and individuals. The party says the vote denies them immediate help with rising bills.

MÉS accuses the PP and council president Llorenç Galmés of turning their backs on families. Its council spokesperson, Catalina Inés Perelló, says the island government has missed a chance to help people struggling to make ends meet.

The motion cites annual inflation of 4.4% in the Balearic Islands in August, a tenth of a percentage point above the Spanish average. Compared with a year earlier, transport cost 5.3% more. Housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels rose 5%, while food and drink rose 3.2%.

Fuel adds to the squeeze, MÉS says, particularly in Mallorca’s Part Forana municipalities. Since late June, petrol has gone up by about 50 cents per litre and diesel by about 44 cents per litre.
