Mallorca craft takes centre stage at Palma theatre

At the Teatre Principal in Palma, reception and ushering staff now wear Mallorca-made accessories: scarves for women, and llengües-fabric ties and bow ties for men. The theatre is also putting on a permanent exhibition for the whole season, bringing together work from the five craft groups certified by Moda Artesana de Mallorca. The Consell de Mallorca unveiled the change on Tuesday.

The new accessories were made by Artesania Tèxtil Bujosa, a third-generation family firm founded in Santa Maria del Camí in 1949. Its workshop keeps the island’s llengües weaving alive through ikat, a technique in which natural cotton, linen and silk fibres are hand-dyed before being woven on mechanical looms dating from 1870.

The ties use llengües cloth. The burgundy silk scarves and bow ties are hand-dyed, using the same fabric chosen for the costume of the Sibil·la at Palma’s Santa Eulària church, made by Feel Mallorca for Christmas 2025.

Island-made work on show

Moda Artesana de Mallorca recognises products made on the island that preserve traditional techniques. Its five craft areas cover textiles and clothing, ornamentation, plant fibres, skin and leather, and footwear.

The theatre display includes an embroidered tulle blouse with an asymmetric llengües-fabric skirt, plus a dress and jacket by Maria Genovard made from old cloth with crochet details. Visitors can also see a shoulder bag from the Flor de pauma collection.

Other pieces include a skirt, pareo, llengües-fabric shirt and tailored jacket made from hand-dyed linen, llengües cloth and silk. Jewellery featuring the Mallorcan cross, a woven leather bag by Mastrenat and traditional Mallorcan footwear complete the exhibition.
