Mallorca fuel: Prohens seeks VAT cut as tax nears half

Fuel and staple foods are at the centre of a VAT-cut demand in Mallorca. Balearic Islands President Marga Prohens called on Spain’s central government on Tuesday to lower value-added tax on both, and to provide direct aid to sectors affected by rising prices. She made the appeal during a scrutiny session at the Balearic Parliament in Palma, Mallorca.

Manuela Cañadas, Vox’s spokesperson, had raised the issue in the chamber. She said taxes make up almost half the price of petrol, which she stressed is not a luxury. Cañadas said families are having to watch every expense while the primary sector works at a loss and faces what she described as unfair competition from products entering from Morocco.

Prohens said the Ministry of Economy, Finance and Innovation is examining measures planned by the central government to establish how the Balearic Islands can add to them. She also reminded Cañadas that Vox had voted against previous measures in the same area, and asked whether the party would now change its position.
