Mallorca gridlock: PSIB demands action on water and crowds

Gridlock, summer water shortages and packed natural areas are driving Mallorca’s Socialist Party, PSIB, to demand urgent action from the Consell de Mallorca. On Friday, 4 September, the party said the island government had made problems worse rather than delivering the fixes it promised.

Amanda Fernández, the PSIB candidate for the Consell de Mallorca, pointed to pressure on beaches and the Serra de Tramuntana, as well as water problems during the summer. She also accused the island authorities of having no effective policies to tackle climate change.

The party said traffic jams are not simply a matter of perception but a daily reality for people on Mallorca. It noted that island president Llorenç Galmés had said he would eliminate them.

Tourism rises as pressure grows

Fernández said the strain had deepened while tourism continued to set records. From January to July, visitor numbers were 11% higher than in 2023, she said, arguing that this did not amount to limiting growth.

She recalled protests against tourism overcrowding and said many Mallorcans want to be able to live on the island rather than merely get by. Fernández also criticised weaker environmental protection, rule changes affecting the Serra de Tramuntana and attempts to allow discretionary decisions without prior reports.

Motion calls for immediate response

Sofía Alonso, deputy spokesperson for the Socialist group in the Consell de Mallorca, described a “major collapse of the island”. She has presented a motion calling for a swift, wide-ranging response.

The proposal covers infrastructure, the climate emergency, water protection, pressure on natural areas and residents’ quality of life. The PSIB is urging the Consell de Mallorca to act.
