Mallorca heavy rain alert: flooding risk from Saturday
Mallorca, in Spain’s Balearic Islands, faces heavy rain from Saturday, 17 October: torrential downpours could cause flooding. Spain’s General Secretariat for Civil Protection and Emergencies has issued an alert for the islands and the country’s Mediterranean coast. It urges drivers to slow down and warns everyone to stay off flooded stretches of road, whether on foot or in a vehicle.
Sunday could bring the heaviest rain
The alert draws on forecasts from the Spanish State Meteorological Agency (Aemet). Rain is expected to grow heavier and spread across the Balearic Islands and the Mediterranean coast during Saturday afternoon. Sunday could bring intense, persistent rain and substantial amounts of rainfall.
Aemet says it cannot yet tell which areas will get the most rain, or how much will fall. It expects temperatures to drop across Spain as the weather changes, and advises people to watch for forecast updates over the coming days.
Stay clear of flooded roads
Civil Protection advises drivers to favour main roads and motorways during heavy rain. It warns against crossing floodwater: what lies beneath it may be impossible to see. It also urges people to take care where they park, because rapidly rising water can damage or sweep away cars in flood-prone areas.
If moving water surrounds a vehicle, Civil Protection advises leaving it and heading for higher ground.
