Mallorca rescue helicopter reaches 200 rescues

Two injured hikers in Cúber, Mallorca, were helped by the sa Milana rescue helicopter on 26 September — its 200th rescue since entering service a year ago.

The Mallorca Fire Service aircraft was introduced to cut response times in hard-to-reach areas, especially in the Serra de Tramuntana. Its crew brings together mountain rescue firefighters, winch operators and pilots.

Care starts before the flight

Rescues are coordinated with the SAMU 061 emergency health service, the Consell de Mallorca said. That allows patients to receive advanced medical care before and during their transfer.

The island council said coordination between ground bases and the flight unit has drastically reduced the time needed for medical evacuations on Mallorca.

Joan Fornàs, Mallorca’s director of emergencies, said the 200-rescue mark showed how vital the fire service helicopter had become. Each flight, he said, had taken people to safety.

The Consell de Mallorca said it would continue investing in modern emergency equipment. The service is intended to protect residents and the thousands of visitors who explore the island’s natural areas each year.
