18,400 hours: Mallorca home care expands for older people

Mallorca’s home-care service now provides 18,400 hours of support a month for older people who need care. The increase adds 5,400 monthly hours compared with 2023, helping people who want to remain in their own homes. The service is run by the Mallorca Institute of Social Affairs (IMAS).

Known as the Servicio de Atención Integral a Domicilio (SAID), the scheme supports older people in need of care at home. The Council of Mallorca says its 18,400 monthly hours mark a 41.5% rise from the 13,000 hours provided in 2023.

Hours rose in stages

The expansion first took the service from 13,000 to 17,000 hours a month. Mallorca’s Council and the Balearic Government then agreed the further rise to 18,400 hours.

Their agreement, signed in September 2025, runs until 2028. It provides for more than €13.6 million from the Balearic Government and 654,000 hours of care over its term.

Support now runs through weekends

Since 2024, the service has also operated on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Guillermo Sánchez, president of IMAS and Mallorca’s councillor for Social Welfare, said the needs of an older person requiring care do not end on Friday.

The expansion also brings a new digital management system and tablets for staff. These are intended to make task planning, team co-ordination and monitoring of each person’s care easier. The Council and Balearic Government plan to work towards another increase in hours as needs change.
