Mallorca horses: MPs push to protect bloodlines
Mallorca’s purebred horses could get more help to protect their bloodlines: the Balearic Parliament is urging the regional government to support breeders. Its Economic Affairs Committee backed a proposal from People’s Party MP Ana Isabel Curtó on Thursday, 29 October 2026. The proposal calls for work within the existing breeding programme, with a focus on genetic diversity.
Help for less common bloodlines
Parliament recognises the purebred Mallorca horse as part of the Balearic Islands’ genetic, historical and cultural heritage. It wants the government to continue conservation work with the breeders’ association and the Institute for Agri-food and Fisheries Research and Training (Irfap). The programme prioritises purebred breeding, the next generation of breeding horses and genetic diversity.
MPs also want the government to examine whether existing aid schemes can help breeders, particularly with births recorded in the breed register and bloodlines that are less widely represented. Any support would depend on available funds. The proposal calls for continued conservation of the horses’ genetic material using existing facilities and resources.
Breeding advice and public information
Technical services would advise breeders on reproduction and which horses to pair. Closer cooperation between owners could help them find suitable breeding horses and reduce inbreeding.
Parliament also wants the breed included in existing fairs, equestrian events and information campaigns, working with local councils and sector groups. People interested in breeding Mallorca horses should be able to find out about the programme, paperwork and available aid. MPs want an annual update on the breed’s progress, drawn from data already collected.
