Mallorca hospitals: over 50 wait for admission, PSIB says

Mallorca: more than 50 emergency patients a day wait to be admitted at each of Son Espases and Son Llàtzer hospitals, PSIB politician Patricia Gómez says. In an interview reported on 22 October 2026, she accused the Balearic government of allowing pressure on hospital emergency departments to persist. She says some patients have had to be transferred between hospitals.

Why Gómez blames delays in primary care

Gómez says hospitals across the Balearic Islands were already treating around 500 emergency cases a day in July last year. She argues that the pressure cannot be put down to a seasonal rise in flu or other respiratory infections alone.

The former Balearic health minister says primary care services need more support. If someone is offered a doctor’s appointment three weeks away, they go to an emergency department instead, she says, adding to the hospitals’ workload.

The dispute over health plans

Gómez says the government has not renewed a primary care plan covering 2022 to 2025 or extended an existing plan to modernise health centres. In Felanitx, she says, it took three years to lay the foundation stone for a project that was already prepared.

She also disputes Balearic president Marga Prohens’s claim that waiting times have improved, pointing to figures from the Balearic health service, IbSalut. Gómez fears that falling trust in public healthcare is pushing people who can afford it towards private insurance. Her claim that the government intends to favour private providers remains an allegation.
