15 tonnes: Mallorca hotels send aid to Liberia
Mallorca hotels are preparing 15 tonnes of donated supplies for Liberia, giving beds, linens, equipment and hygiene goods a new use. The Federación Empresarial Hotelera de Mallorca, the Rotary Club Palma Almudaina and Hotel Costa Azul are coordinating the first shipment. On 21 September, the material was being readied for transport to Valencia before it is shipped to Liberia.
The load fills 30 pallets and includes sheets, towels, blankets, duvets, bathrobes, clothing and uniforms. There are also household items, small electrical appliances, computer equipment, beds, tools, and hygiene and medical supplies.
The shipment had been due to leave in March, but international conflicts created logistical problems and forced a delay. During the wait, Hotel Costa Azul owner Juan de Luna and his family kept the donations in their own storage facilities.
In Liberia, the In Mary's Hands Foundation will receive and sort the materials. The foundation, run by a family with Mallorcan roots living in the country’s capital, operates a clinic that provides free medical care for people in its most disadvantaged neighbourhoods.
Javier Vich, president of the Federación Empresarial Hotelera de Mallorca, said the island’s hoteliers were acting together in response to need. Rotary Club Palma Almudaina spokesperson Rosa Reynés said goods with a long useful life could help improve living conditions for people who need them most.
