Mallorca hotels expect good September and October

Mallorca’s hotel season is still in full swing, with the island’s hoteliers expecting good results in September and October. María José Aguiló, executive vice-president of the Mallorca Hotel Business Federation (FEHM), said in Palma on Friday that she would not yet call an end to the high season. She spoke before a WTW event on risk management in tourism.

Aguiló said seasons are stretching further. Hotels are fully open at a rate of 20 per cent, while February, March and April see rates rise above 40, 70 and up to 90 per cent respectively.

The sector is pleased with how the season has gone so far, she said. After earlier years of “euphoria” and a “champagne effect”, hotel performance is now settling into a more stable pattern.

Aguiló said claims of falling tourist spending on restaurants and leisure activities need to be backed by data. But she pointed to economic pressures in some major source markets, where families are booking well ahead and keeping a tighter grip on their budgets.

The war in the Middle East has meant the loss of one type of guest, she said, but another profile is arriving and rediscovering destinations.

WTW’s head of Travel and Tourism, Juan Carlos Tárraga, said the threats facing the industry keep changing, even as some remain. Absenteeism, geopolitics and cyber security are the main challenges now, he said.

The Palma event brings together business representatives and experts to examine the issues shaping tourism activity.
