Mallorca housing data gaps: MÉS attacks policy
In Palma, Mallorca, MÉS per Mallorca says key housing facts are missing from the Balearic Islands Housing Observatory, leaving the government with an incomplete picture of the property market. The party raised the criticism on Thursday, 17 September 2026. Its MP Ferran Rosa said the observatory identifies an imbalance between supply and demand but does not show how the market works.
MÉS says the study does not reveal how many homes stand empty, how many await renovation or how many are used as second homes. It also says there is too little information on who owns housing and the different ways people gain access to the market.
Rosa said those gaps make a full assessment of the housing situation very difficult. MÉS argues that the Balearic government has built its public housing policy without a rigorous diagnosis, using what it calls a liberal approach backed by a biased observatory.
The party also pointed to a radar for vacant building land, announced three years ago by then housing councillor Marta Vidal, which it says is still unavailable. Rosa questioned why the government wants to build homes on rural land when it does not know how much land is free for construction in urban areas.
