Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands: a net wage of €2,326 a month across 14 payments is needed to cover basic costs and a little social and cultural life, trade union Comisiones Obreras (CCOO) says. The union set out its figures in Palma, Mallorca, on 2 November. Across the Balearic Islands, it puts the annual net wage needed at €33,963, up 7.3% from last year.

Housing squeezes other spending

Housing is the biggest cost in the Balearic Islands, ahead of food and transport. CCOO says housing costs have risen 18.6% across the islands and 20% on Mallorca.

Higher rents are forcing workers to cut spending on food, clothes and shoes, says the union’s Balearic employment secretary, Maria Àngels Aguiló. Food spending has fallen 6.2%, even though food prices have risen 27%, according to CCOO.

A wide gap between islands

The monthly net wage benchmark across 14 payments is €1,939 on Menorca, €3,433 on Ibiza and €3,006 on Formentera. Aguiló attributes the differences to housing costs, which CCOO says have risen 25% on Ibiza.

More than 40% of workers in the Balearic Islands struggle to make ends meet, says CCOO’s regional general secretary, José Luís García. The union is calling for a mobilisation on 11 November to demand higher wages and lower housing costs.
