Mallorca, in Spain’s Balearic Islands, is set to get a third power link to Menorca under a draft grid plan that also calls for 150 kilometres of new lines. The link is among the plan’s priorities, alongside completion of a second connection to the Spanish mainland. On Monday, 26 October 2026, Spanish energy secretary Joan Groizard and Balearic energy minister Alejandro Sáenz de San Pedro discussed changes to the draft.

New lines and substations

Across the Balearic Islands, the plan proposes increasing capacity on another 72 kilometres of existing lines. It also includes 11 new substation facilities and work at most existing sites, including those at Inca on Mallorca and Son Castelló.

The Spanish Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge says other grid work would support the development of Palma’s port. Three new electrical components are also planned to improve the stability of the power system.

Ports and new homes

The ministry says the grid must meet extra demand from electrifying the ports of Eivissa, Alcúdia, Palma and Maó, as well as from new homes. Industrial growth and electric transport are also part of the plan.

The draft was revised after a consultation brought in 2,566 responses. It now includes an additional substation and five new connection points to support the distribution network. It also provides 1.2 GW more capacity for planned renewable energy projects. The ministry gave no timetable for the individual works.
