Mallorca milk: some heads to Valencia as demand stalls

Some of the 5.2 million litres of milk handled each year by Quesos Grimalt is being sent from Mallorca to Valencia because demand is too weak to make more cheese. The firm receives milk from seven active livestock farms on the island. Director Pedro Monroig outlined the position after the Agama plant, part of the Damm Group, closed on 3 March.

Quesos Grimalt says it has the capacity to turn all the milk it handles into cheese. But current demand does not allow it to increase production, leaving part of the supply bound for Valencia.

The figures show how sharply Mallorca’s dairy sector has shrunk. More than 100 farms produced milk on the island a few years ago; now just nine livestock holdings remain active. Quesos Grimalt has made artisan cheeses and dairy products since 1948, and restructured only a few months ago.

The company now plans to upgrade and expand its facilities to make products including fresh milk. It also wants more Mallorcans to choose local dairy goods. Monroig said the sector has no future without support from people on the island.

SAT Son Carbó and family consultancy IGD Asesores have joined the business as partners for its new phase. IGD Asesores had worked with Son Carbó for years before becoming directly involved in the project.
