Mallorca cultural groups lose off-island grant vote

On Mallorca in the Balearic Islands, non-profit cultural groups lose a bid to qualify for grants for work beyond the islands, even when they earn no fee: the Balearic Parliament rejects a proposal to change the funding rules. Lawmakers vote down the PSIB motion on Tuesday, 27 October. It would have asked the Balearic government to review grant calls run by the Institut d'Estudis Baleàrics for Balearic music and cultural activities outside the islands.

The change would have let non-profit associations apply for help with exchanges and cultural projects, including work for which they receive no payment. A second proposal sought a specific provision in future grant calls for unpaid performances of high cultural, social or heritage interest. Applicants would have had to show the quality and cultural scope of their project, their actual costs and its benefit to Balearic culture.

Both proposals fail by 27 votes to 23. The People's Party and non-attached members vote against; the PSIB, MÉS per Mallorca and the Mixed Group vote in favour. Three Vox members abstain. An earlier committee vote had ended in a tie.
