Mallorca petrol up 50 cents: MÉS demands help
Mallorca households face a squeeze: petrol 95 costs about 50 cents more per litre across the Balearic Islands than it did at the end of June, according to MÉS per Mallorca. On Thursday, 1 October, the party said it would ask Mallorca’s island council for emergency help for families and people on low and middle incomes. It wants the help in place before the end of 2026.
Diesel has risen by nearly 44 cents a litre over the same period, MÉS says. By late September, fuel across the Balearics averaged around two euros a litre. Transport cost 5.3% more than a year earlier, while food and non-alcoholic drinks were up 3.2%.
In many towns outside Palma, a car is essential for getting to work, taking children to school or caring for others, said the party’s council spokeswoman, Catalina Inés Perelló. Higher fuel bills hit those households directly at the end of the month, she said.
MÉS wants the Mallorcan Institute of Social Affairs to open applications before the end of 2026. The proposed help would depend on income and financial need, and would cover people living alone as well as families. The party says the council should fund everyone who qualifies and allow them to keep other benefits where the rules permit.
MÉS also accuses the island government of failing to use money announced in March under its Mallorca Protege plan. It wants those funds spent in full, with extra money for the new help. The council has yet to agree to the proposal.
