Mallorca rain: east bucks the islands’ wetter trend

Eastern Mallorca is the exception to a wetter-than-usual pattern across the Balearic Islands. The State Meteorological Agency, Aemet, said on 4 September that rainfall there has not risen above normal levels since the hydrological year began on 1 October.

Across Spain, 638 l/m2 of rain has fallen over the same period. That is 7% above the normal figure of 596 l/m2.

Most island areas are running above their usual rainfall levels, while extensive parts of the Canary Islands have recorded more than double their normal climate totals. On the mainland, the biggest surpluses are in the south, including north-western Ciudad Real province and the Sierra de Grazalema.

From 26 August to 1 September, rain fell mainly over the western half of the peninsula and the higher Canary Islands. More than 10 l/m2 was also recorded in Galicia, Asturias, north-western and western Castilla y León, and northern Cáceres.

The heaviest totals topped 80 l/m2 on the A Coruña coast. Aemet recorded 54 l/m2 at Vigo/Peinador, 49 l/m2 in Pontevedra and 40 l/m2 in A Coruña.
