Mallorca rain tops 60 litres after record summer
Mallorca receives more than 60 litres of rain per square metre on 9 September, following Spain’s hottest summer since records began in 1961. The heaviest downpours that day also hit inland Girona and Barcelona, the Alicante coast and San Sebastián. Spain’s State Meteorological Agency, Aemet, says the Balearic Islands have generally had more rain than usual, apart from eastern Mallorca.
Rainfall runs above average
Spain has recorded 641 litres per square metre of accumulated rainfall since the hydrological year began in early October. That is 6% above the usual 604 litres per square metre for this point in the year.
Rainfall is also mostly above normal across the islands. The contrast is strongest in the Canary Islands, where large areas have received more than twice their usual climatological totals.
61 heatwave days in the Balearics
The rain follows a record-breaking summer. Aemet says June, July and August 2026 were Spain’s warmest summer since its records began in 1961.
The mainland and Balearic Islands recorded 61 days with heatwave conditions, an all-time record, according to the agency.
