Mallorca rent cap ruled out as Prohens backs new homes
Mallorca, in Spain’s Balearic Islands, will not get a rent cap under Marga Prohens’s plans: the Balearic president refuses to make the designation that would allow rents to be limited. At a parliamentary sitting on Tuesday, 27 October 2026, she calls rent controls a failed approach and argues for building more homes instead.
Prohens says more than 10,000 homes are at various stages and are intended for local people. She also rejects a MÉS per Mallorca proposal to pause development on land zoned for building, arguing that it would reduce the supply of homes without changing demand.
MÉS per Mallorca spokesman Lluís Apesteguia says the housing tax measures Prohens has announced help only wealthy people who can afford to buy. He asks when the homes she cites will be available, saying people need help with housing costs now.
