Mallorca’s island council is putting 124,000 euros into aid for Sahrawis this year. Next week, it sends two officials to New York to press the United Nations on the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination. Social welfare councillor Guillermo Sánchez and island director Magdalena Ramis will attend sessions of the UN General Assembly’s Special Political and Decolonisation Committee.

Taking the case to the UN

The Council of Mallorca says the trip follows a request from the Association of Friends of the Sahrawi People of the Balearics and the Polisario Front. The delegation aims to describe the Sahrawi people’s situation and call for UN resolutions to be carried out.

Sánchez and Ramis met the association on Wednesday and reaffirmed the council’s support for its aid work. The council has attended the committee before: councillor Rafel Bosch went last year, while council president Llorenç Galmés spoke there two years ago.

How Mallorca’s aid is spent

Of this year’s 124,000 euros, the council has allocated 80,000 euros to paediatric and nursing care, nutrition and vaccinations for children aged up to five. Another 25,000 euros strengthens a food programme.

The remaining 19,000 euros goes to Vacances en Pau. In recent years, the number of host families on Mallorca taking part in the programme has doubled from 20 to 40.
