Mallorca saturation: bishop calls for restraint

Mallorca’s saturation by people is harming the environment and the way people live together, Bishop Sebastià Taltavull has warned. He raised the issue at a Creation Care Mass in Palma Cathedral on Sunday. The Bishopric of Mallorca said he pointed to pressure on natural spaces, land planning and the welcome given to tourists, visitors and migrants.

Taltavull told the congregation to see the created world as God’s gift, give thanks for its beauty and take responsibility for protecting it. The Mass was part of the Season of Creation, which began on 1 September and continues until 4 October, the feast of Saint Francis of Assisi.

The bishop also recalled Pope Leo XIV’s message for the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation. That message links the environmental crisis with wounds caused by violence and war.

For Taltavull, caring for creation and working for peace should define believers, with the call applying particularly to Mallorca and the Balearic Islands. He returned to a pastoral letter, Ecology and Tourism on Our Islands, published by the Balearic bishops 36 years ago, saying Mallorca’s future depends on sensible action, real care for nature and keeping progress in proportion.
