Mallorca sea hits 33.02ºC: water temperature record

The sea off Mallorca reached 33.02ºC when the Dragonera buoy logged its reading at 18:00 on 5 August. It is the highest water temperature yet measured across the network run by Puertos del Estado. The buoy near Mallorca has collected temperature data since 2006.

The heat was not confined to Mallorca. All the buoys in the Levantino-Balearic basin except Valencia broke their own maximum-temperature records this summer. Mahón reached 32.36ºC at 17:00 on 8 August, while the coastal buoy at Tarragona measured 30.7ºC at 17:00 on 9 August and Barcelona reached 30.5ºC at 15:00 the same day.

Puertos del Estado’s buoy-based marine climate indicator places summer 2026 among the warmest years in its record. Temperatures stood above climate averages for almost every summer month, with the Levantino-Balearic and North Atlantic basins making a particularly large contribution.

Records were also set off the Basque and Galician coasts, including 28.4ºC at Pasaia II and 25.27ºC at Bilbao-Vizcaya. The picture was sharply different off Málaga, where the coastal buoy fell to its August low of 15.6ºC at 10:00 on Tuesday 25 August. Puertos del Estado said persistent westerly winds brought colder deep water to the surface there, a process known as upwelling.
