Mallorca left out of PSOE–Frente Amplio Senate pact
Mallorca is outside the PSOE–Frente Amplio Senate pact: the two parties will not run together in the Balearic Islands for Spain’s 29 November general election. Parties have until midnight on Monday to submit their Congress and Senate candidates to provincial electoral boards. The lists will appear in Spain’s Official State Gazette on Wednesday 28 October, but they will not yet be final.
The Senate pact covers other constituencies, but excludes the Balearic Islands, Catalonia and the Canary Islands. For Congress, Frente Amplio is led by Ada Colau and Emilio Delgado. It has reached an agreement with Podemos only in the Canary Islands and the Valencian Community.
After the deadline, electoral boards have two days to flag problems with the lists. Parties then have 48 hours from notification to put them right. The boards have until 2 November to approve the candidates, with the approved lists due in the gazette the next day.
This is the first Spanish general election in which Congress lists must alternate women and men. The same rule applies to Senate candidates when they are grouped into lists. One more Senate seat is also being contested: Formentera will elect its own senator.
