Mallorca, in Spain’s Balearic Islands, sees a heatwave from 2 to 7 September 2026: across the country, the month becomes the hottest September since records began in 1961. The Spanish State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) reports a nationwide average temperature of 22.5ºC in its monthly review, published on Friday.

That is 3.4ºC above the usual September average and 0.7ºC above the previous record, set in 1987. For the first time, September’s average also exceeds the normal summer average of 22.1ºC.

The heat comes with sharply different rainfall figures. Mainland Spain records 15.9 l/m2 for the month, just 36% of the usual September amount. At Palma de Mallorca Airport, the monthly total reaches 92.8 l/m2 — one of the highest totals among the stations listed in the review.
