Mallorca unemployment rises despite more Balearic jobs
Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands, has 1.9% more people unemployed this September than a year ago, even as employers across the islands sign more contracts. Across the Balearics, 26,547 people are registered as unemployed, up 493 on last September. At a press conference on Friday, 2 October, regional employment minister Catalina Cabrer blamed the rise on the extraordinary regularisation of migrants.
It is the first September increase in unemployment across the Balearics in five years. Eivissa records the sharpest rise, at 6.5%, followed by Formentera at 2.9%. Menorca's figure falls by 4.5%.
Why Cabrer points to regularisation
Cabrer said 1,102 of the unemployed people across the Balearics are foreign nationals registered under RE, the code used for the extraordinary regularisation. The number of unemployed people from outside the European Union stands at 4,806, up 1,580 on a year ago. Cabrer said the regularisation process was beginning to affect the labour market.
More contracts and more people in work
Employers across the Balearics signed 36,120 new contracts in September, 3,517 more than a year earlier. The number of people registered with Social Security as working also rose, reaching 682,486 — an increase of 29,078 on last September.
