Mallorca shops brace for orange rain and storm alert
Mallorca shops are being told to protect stock, secure doors and check electrics as an orange warning for heavy rain and thunderstorms covers the whole island. The call came on Wednesday from retail association Afedeco after the State Meteorological Agency, Aemet, raised the alert level.
Afedeco says businesses should follow its flood and emergency plan to cut risks, protect staff and customers, and limit damage to premises.
Stock and documents moved to higher areas
Before the storms arrive, shopkeepers are advised to place goods and important documents in elevated areas. They should also secure doors, windows and outdoor items, while checking drains and electrical installations.
During the storm, Afedeco says staff should remain inside the premises and avoid basements or other areas at risk of flooding. Electricity should be disconnected if water may enter the shop, and businesses should follow official information channels.
Checks before reopening affected areas
Once the storm has passed, the protocol says shops should check that the premises are safe before entering. Any damage should be recorded for insurers, while affected spaces should be properly ventilated to prevent later problems.
