Mallorca shops: 64% see more people, no sales lift
On the Spanish island of Mallorca, 64% of traders see more people on the streets but no rise in sales. The finding comes from a Pimeco survey of the 2026 summer season, reported on 28 September. For some shops, business is growing; for others, it is going backwards.
Busy streets, mixed results
Sales have stalled at 38.9% of the shops surveyed. Another 25.6% report growth, while 25.6% report a fall. Pimeco president Carolina Domingo says the type of shop, what it sells and who buys from it all make a difference.
Among shops with higher sales, 37.9% report a gain of 10% to 20%. Discounts offer no clear dividing line: 58.6% of shops doing better ran promotions, but so did 55.2% of those whose sales fell.
Shoppers are spending more carefully
Tourists are customers at 78% of the shops surveyed. At almost one in five shops, they account for more than 75% of customers. More than 60% of businesses notice a change in how tourists shop: they spend less, look harder for offers and plan purchases more carefully. The survey also finds growing interest in locally sourced products.
Local customers are cautious too. At 39% of shops, traders think residents are spending less this year. Domingo says keeping those customers coming back is vital for local shops. She argues that personal service, specialist knowledge and quality give them a way to stand out, even when busier streets do not bring higher sales.
