Mallorca steamer rescue: Ibiza honours 150 saved

Eivissa, Ibiza, honoured the families of fishermen who saved all 150 passengers from the steamer Mallorca on 23 September. The ceremony at Botafoc passenger terminal recalled the 1913 rescue, when local crews took their boats out in a violent storm.

In January, the steamer ran aground on the reefs of Sa Llosa at Santa Eulària, leaving the people on board in danger. The fishermen defied the extreme weather and brought the entire passenger list to safety, according to the Government Delegation.

Three families descended from those fishermen attended the tribute. Authorities presented them with commemorative plaques and screened a film about the rescue.

The film linked the fishermen’s actions to the principles of helping people and protecting human life at sea. Those principles now guide the work of the Sociedad de Salvamento y Seguridad Marítima, known as Sasemar.

The commemoration ended with a visit to the Salvamento Marítimo vessel Marta Mata.
