Mallorca storm alert: orange warning for thunderstorms

Mallorca is under an orange warning for rain and thunderstorms on Wednesday, with wind and high waves also expected around the island. Spain’s state weather agency, AEMET, has issued yellow warnings for waves around Mallorca and for wind on the island. Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera also have orange rain and thunderstorm warnings.

Menorca faces an additional yellow warning for a rissaga, a sudden sea-level surge often called a mini-tsunami. Yellow wave warnings cover all four islands, while Menorca also has a yellow wind warning.

Storms may build during the afternoon

A front moving through Spain is expected to bring unsettled weather to the north of the country during the first half of the day, AEMET said. By the afternoon, thunderstorms may spread to the Balearics or develop over the islands.

Very strong wind gusts are possible in the Balearics. Morning haze may also affect the islands.

Temperatures set to fall

Maximum temperatures are forecast to drop generally across Spain and the island groups on Wednesday, according to AEMET. Minimum temperatures are also expected to fall, although tropical nights may continue in southern Spain and along the Mediterranean.
