Mallorca storm triggers 100 call-outs as trees fall

Fallen trees and flooding prompted 100 emergency call-outs across Mallorca on Wednesday, as a storm swept over the island. Palma accounted for 43 of the incidents recorded between 10.00 and 16.00. The Balearic Emergency Coordination Centre 112 logged 119 incidents across the islands in that period.

Tree falls triggered 36 call-outs, while flooding in buildings, businesses and public roads led to another 31. Palma was followed by Esporles with nine incidents, Manacor and Calvià with six each, and Banyalbufar and Marratxí with four apiece.

The centre also recorded 12 interruptions to basic services, eight fallen objects in built-up areas and eight reports of obstacles or liquids on roads. There were four risks of falling debris, three faulty traffic lights and two risks of buildings flooding.

Menorca had five incidents — three in Maó and two in Ciutadella. One was reported in Santa Eulària on Eivissa, while the location of 13 others had not yet been confirmed.

Rain and wind batter Mallorca

The State Meteorological Agency, Aemet, said the thunderstorms arrived from the Peninsula through the Serra de Tramuntana from 13.00, bringing intense lightning activity across much of Mallorca and, to a lesser extent, north-west Menorca.

After 16.00, Llucmajor had recorded 47 l/m2 of rain, Santa Maria 34 l/m2 and Palma airport 30 l/m2. Petra, Port de Sóller, Son Bonet airport, Portopi and the Universitat de les Illes Balears recorded between 29 l/m2 and 22 l/m2.

Provisional Aemet figures put the strongest gust at 109 km/h in Capdepera. The Universitat de les Illes Balears recorded 94 km/h, while Port de Sóller reached 73 km/h.

The 112 emergency centre activated an orange alert for the Balearic Islands over the forecast of heavy rain and thunderstorms on Wednesday.
