Mallorca storm: woman dies, 173 incidents

A 63-year-old woman has died in Felanitx on Mallorca after a surge of water swept her away as she walked to work on Wednesday. The Mallorca storm triggered 173 incidents across the Balearic Islands between 10.00 and 20.00, with 149 on the island. Seventy-seven cases were still open by the evening.

Emergency number 112 recorded the highest totals in Palma, with 59 incidents, followed by Esporles with 16 and Manacor with 12. The Emergency Coordination Centre said the fast-moving but intense spell of heavy rain, thunderstorms and wind gusts had put the islands on orange alert.

Trees down and a road closed

Fallen trees accounted for 64 incidents, mainly in Port des Canonge. There were also 39 floods in buildings, businesses and public streets.

The Torrent de sa Cabana overflowed, closing part of the Ma-4015 road from Manacor towards Cales de Mallorca. The emergency service also logged falling parts from buildings and street infrastructure, hazards on roads and two rockfalls.

Power cuts ease after 17,000 affected

Fallen medium-voltage lines left 5,000 Endesa customers without electricity at 18.00, down from 17,000 earlier in the afternoon. Most were on Mallorca, while fewer than 200 were affected on Menorca.

Fourteen lines remained affected. The most significant was the Palmanyola line, which supplies Esporles and Banyalbufar; power was expected to return that night.

The State Meteorological Agency, Aemet, recorded 69 litres of rain per square metre in Manacor, 66 in Llucmajor and 48 in Son Servera. Gusts reached between 90 and 100 kilometres per hour at stations run by the University of the Balearic Islands and in Capdepera.

The worst of the storm had passed by the evening. Only lighter rain or thunderstorms remained possible overnight in Ibiza and Formentera, with residual wind and coastal conditions at sea forecast for Thursday.
