Mallorca storm: 54 call-outs, woman rescued

Firefighters rescue a woman from her water-filled car in Felanitx, Mallorca, on Thursday afternoon. They also help several drivers stranded in pooled water on the road towards the Son Negre industrial estate. Mallorca accounts for 54 of the 70 storm incidents logged across the Balearics from Wednesday to Friday.

Both Felanitx rescues end without injuries, according to the Balearic Islands Directorate General for Emergencies. The authority closes the weather episode on Friday, saying none of the 70 incidents was serious.

Heavy rain brought 60 litres in just a few hours in Felanitx on Thursday afternoon. Elsewhere, crews dealt mainly with fallen trees, objects and liquids on roads, and flooding in public streets, buildings and business premises.

The Emergency Coordination Centre handled the incidents over 48 hours, from 13:00 on Wednesday to 13:00 on Friday. Eivissa recorded 13 incidents, Formentera two and Menorca one.

Warning drops after final burst of bad weather

Mallorca, Eivissa and Formentera move from an orange to a yellow weather warning for rain and thunderstorms. The State Meteorological Agency, Aemet, expects the final stretch of the storm to be low intensity, and the warning could be lifted late on Friday.

A small forest fire was also reported on Wednesday afternoon and may have been caused by a lightning strike. On Eivissa and Formentera, Emergencies sent a precautionary Es-Alert message as a storm front carrying strong electrical activity, rain and wind approached, while school collection was brought forward on both islands.
