Mallorca storm triggers 100 incidents on Wednesday as trees come down and water floods buildings, shops and public roads. The Emergency Coordination Centre 112 recorded 119 incidents across the Balearics between 10.00 and 16.00, with 100 on Mallorca. Palma, Mallorca, accounted for 43 of them, while Esporles had nine and Manacor and Calvià six each.

Fallen trees prompted 36 interventions, the largest single category. Flooding caused another 31, while 112 also logged 12 disruptions to basic services, eight pieces of street infrastructure coming loose and eight cases of obstacles or liquid on roads.

Mallorca Fire Service attended 85 minor incidents, including the rescue of one person in Calvià. It also dealt with light flooding and trees on roads. Banyalbufar, Esporles and Port des Canonge were the worst-hit areas outside Palma.

The storm also damaged some facilities at the Palma campus of the University of the Balearic Islands. Technicians are assessing the damage. Elsewhere, 112 recorded five incidents on Menorca — three in Maó and two in Ciutadella — and one in Santa Eulària on Ibiza. A further 13 reports had no confirmed location when the tally was made.

The State Meteorological Agency, Aemet, said intense electrical activity began mainly after 13.00. The storm arrived from the Spanish mainland via the Serra de Tramuntana, affecting much of Mallorca and, to a lesser extent, north-west Menorca.

By shortly after 16.00, Llucmajor had recorded 47 l/m2 of rain, Santa Maria 34 l/m2 and Palma Airport 30 l/m2. Provisional Aemet figures put the strongest gust at 109 km/h in Capdepera, with 94 km/h at the University of the Balearic Islands.

112 has activated an orange alert for the Balearics as strong rain and thunderstorms are forecast to continue on Wednesday.
