Mallorca storms bring orange alert for hail and gusts

Mallorca is under an orange warning for rain and thunderstorms on Thursday, with hail and very strong wind gusts possible overnight and in the early morning. Spain’s State Meteorological Agency, Aemet, has also issued a warning for waves around the island. The orange alert for rain and storms also covers Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera.

Cold air higher in the atmosphere is set to make the Balearics unstable. Aemet expects strong to very strong showers and thunderstorms in the first hours of the day, and says the rain could become torrential.

The storms should ease from midday. Maximum temperatures are also forecast to fall across the Balearics, while moderate winds blow along the coast and come from the east elsewhere in the Mediterranean.
