Mallorca storm: 109 km/h gusts hit the island

A storm has hit Mallorca in the Balearic Islands on Wednesday, bringing 109 km/h wind gusts at Capdepera and 47 l/m2 of rain at Llucmajor. Strong electrical activity began after 13.00 as the thunderstorms moved in from the Peninsula through the Serra de Tramuntana. Much of Mallorca was affected, while north-west Menorca saw less severe conditions.

The Spanish State Meteorological Agency, Agencia Estatal de Meteorología (Aemet), said the storms could bring up to 50 l/m2 of rain in an hour, along with strong winds and possible hail.

Rain totals rise in Llucmajor

After 16.00, Llucmajor recorded the highest rainfall total at 47 l/m2. Santa Maria measured 34 l/m2 and Palma Airport recorded 30 l/m2.

Readings elsewhere ranged from 29 l/m2 to 22 l/m2 in Petra, Port de Sóller, Son Bonet Airport, Portopi and the Universitat de les Illes Balears.

Capdepera takes the strongest gusts

Capdepera recorded the strongest gust at 109 km/h, according to provisional Aemet figures. The Universitat de les Illes Balears measured 94 km/h, followed by Port de Sóller at 73 km/h, Santa Maria at 69 km/h and Llucmajor at 68 km/h.

Petra and Palma Airport each registered gusts of 65 km/h. The Balearic Islands emergency coordination centre 112 has activated an orange alert for Wednesday as more heavy rain and thunderstorms are forecast.
