Mallorca storms: 46 callouts, firefighters rescue woman
Mallorca firefighters rescued a woman from her car in Felanitx after water got inside the vehicle. The rescue was one of 46 weather-related callouts on Mallorca since Wednesday, with the Balearic Government's 112 emergency coordination centre handling 61 across the islands. Firefighters also helped several vehicles stranded in pooled water on the road from Felanitx towards the Son Negre industrial estate; nobody was injured in either incident.
Fallen trees blocking roads accounted for 12 callouts, while eight involved flooded public roads. Emergency crews also dealt with seven cases of obstacles or liquids on roads and six flooded shops or buildings, as well as disruptions to basic services, loose urban features and broken traffic lights.
Rain concentrates in eastern Mallorca
The heaviest rain from midday through the middle of Thursday afternoon fell in eastern Mallorca, including Felanitx, Campos and Manacor. Ibiza saw persistent rain during the afternoon, with Vila, Sant Josep de sa Talaia and Sant Antoni de Portmany recording up to 40 litres per square metre in an hour.
Despite the downpours, the Balearic Government said no serious incidents had been reported. It described conditions across Mallorca, Ibiza and Formentera as generally unstable.
More storms expected overnight
Spain's state weather agency Aemet expects thunderstorms to return from around 02.00 on Friday, affecting Mallorca, Ibiza and Formentera. The new front could bring 50 litres per hour and totals of up to 80 litres in two or three hours, while gusts are not expected to exceed 60 to 70 kilometres per hour.
Aemet's orange weather warning remains in place until 12.00 on Friday. Classes are currently expected to resume normally across the Balearics, but the Directorate General for Emergencies has urged people to avoid unnecessary journeys and follow self-protection advice.
