Mallorca storms could bring flash floods from Friday

Mallorca, in Spain’s Balearic Islands, could see strong or very strong thunderstorms from late Friday. If heavy rain reaches the islands, low-lying areas, streams and normally dry channels could flood suddenly. Spain’s Civil Protection and Emergencies service says the potential danger across the affected region is high, but it is not yet clear where the heaviest rain will fall.

What is driving the rain

Spain’s state weather agency, Aemet, expects cold air higher in the atmosphere to meet moisture from the Mediterranean after a weather front crosses the Spanish mainland on Thursday. Low pressure forming between Spain’s south-east coast and the Balearics will also draw moist air across the Mediterranean.

The heaviest and most persistent rain is initially forecast for parts of Spain’s Mediterranean coast. The Balearics may also be hit by intense thunderstorms, particularly late on Friday.

What happens next

Unsettled weather is expected to continue through the weekend. From Sunday, an isolated pocket of cold air higher in the atmosphere, known as a Dana, could affect the forecast into at least Monday morning. Its path and strength remain uncertain, making it difficult to say where the most rain will fall. Civil Protection advises people to follow updated forecasts and warnings.
