Mallorca storms bring hail and strong winds on Friday
Mallorca faces the threat of strong thunderstorms on Friday afternoon, with hail and strong winds possible. Ibiza and Formentera are also in the firing line, while storms may still return across the Balearics on Saturday. Spain’s State Meteorological Agency, Aemet, issued the forecast through its spokesman Rubén del Campo.
The unsettled spell also covers Almería, Murcia and southern Valencia on the mainland. Temperatures will meanwhile begin to climb, with parts of Extremadura and Andalusia set to exceed 32ºC.
Saturday brings a further chance of showers in the Balearics. Aemet says the most likely and heaviest downpours are expected in southern Valencia province, northern Alicante province, Ibiza and Formentera, though nearby areas could also catch a shower.
From Sunday, much of Spain is expected to turn very settled. Rain remains possible around the Strait of Gibraltar and in Melilla.
Astronomical autumn begins on Monday, but the country is set for summer-like warmth. Temperatures are expected to top 30ºC across wide areas, with 32 to 34ºC possible from Tuesday or Wednesday. Aemet expects largely stable high-pressure weather and very little rain at the start of next week, with temperatures 5 to 10ºC above seasonal norms in many areas of Spain.
