Mallorca storms threaten 60 litres of rain an hour

Overnight storms south of Mallorca broke over the sea, leaving the island without reported incidents. But on Friday, 18 September, heavy rain could return between Mallorca and Eivissa, with bursts of up to 60 litres an hour possible before 12.00. Aurelio Soto, head of Emergencies, said the rain could still reach land.

Orange warning remains in force

The State Meteorological Agency, Aemet, is keeping its orange warning in place for Mallorca, Eivissa and Formentera until midday. From then until 18.00, the warning drops to yellow.

Forecasts put rainfall at 40 to 50 litres an hour in places before 12.00, with isolated bursts reaching 60 litres. Up to 20 litres an hour could still fall until 18.00.

Lightning and flooding risk

The storms are not expected to bring strong winds, Soto said, but they will bring intense lightning.

Even moderate rain could cause local urban flooding, Emergencies warned. Traffic closures and falling trees or other urban elements are also possible.
