Mallorca storms: Menorca rain alert until 18:00
Mallorca, in Spain’s Balearic Islands, is seeing heavy thunderstorms on Tuesday, 20 October: most rain and storm alerts are due to end at midday, but Menorca’s rain alert runs until 18:00. Storms have been sweeping the islands since early morning and are expected to continue into the afternoon on Menorca.
Meteored meteorologist José Miguel Viñas says this should be the last day of storms linked to Adam, a weather system known in Spain as a DANA. Most of the islands’ alerts are yellow. Menorca’s extended warning is for rainfall of 30 litres per square metre in one hour.
Adam has already brought exceptional rain to Ibiza. At Ibiza Airport, 173.8 litres per square metre fell in 24 hours on 18 October — the highest such reading there since records began in 1944. Temperatures in the Balearic Islands are expected to fall at first, but Viñas forecasts more settled weather over the coming days, with no showers or thunderstorms in the Mediterranean.
